...and the wall fell down...

(2008)

for 9 instrumentalists ın 2 groups and large church bell, 20 minutes

So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

Joshua 6: 20 (King James Bible)

This work, dedicated to Prof. Markus Stange, was commissioned by the Messiæn-Festival, Neustadt an der Weinstraße (Germany). The divided ensemble mirrors the characteristic architecture of Neustadt’s collegiate church which has been, since the 17th century, partitioned by a massive wall into two separate confessional realm. The fundamental harmonic structure is based on the complex spectrum (in E-flat / A-flat) of the gigantic “Emperor Bell” (the largest cast-iron bell of the world, struck by the composer himself from the Northern tower of the church). The ensemble included Kirsten Christmann, Verena Comploj (recorders), Prof. Kyrill Rybakov, Magdalena Burkot (clarinets), Prof. Mike Svoboda, Jakob Janotta (trombones), Utae Nakagawa, Rosa San Martin and Verena Sennekamp (strings, members of Ensemble Omega), and Holger Best (conductor).
